AUGUST 2018 TENANT NEWS: PARK(ING) DAY, QUAKER COLLEGE FAIR AND MUCH MORE

Issue 39, August 2018
Friends Center Tenant “News-Later”
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE—of Appreciation
________________________________________
In the relative quiet of late August, it became clear to me that I need to express my deep appreciation to the staff and regular contractors at Friends Center who maintain and manage our three buildings and the grounds, and who manage the common meeting rooms. Our goal is for the physical plant to be a resource for as many community groups as possible, and to do so in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. I hope you will join me in saying THANK YOU to our staff and contractors when you see them around.
— Chris Mohr, Executive Director

PHONE SYSTEM REMINDER
The phone system has now been transferred from AFSC to Friends Center. Previously you didn’t need to dial “1” before a number in the (215) or (267) area codes, but now you do.
We are almost done with the work to switch out digital and analog phones for “IP” phones. Thank you for your patience.
A Thank You to Our Tenants
We recognize our safety drills can sometimes happen at a not-so-ideal time for some but we appreciate your patience and participation. Though we hope to never suffer a tragedy such as the ones we prepare for, we are thankful for the knowledge we gain from the drills.

Friends Center will be participating in Philadelphia’s annual Park(ing) day
PARK(ing) Day was founded in 2005 by Rebar Group, a San-Francisco-based architecture and design firm, and was first presented in Philadelphia in 2008 by Zimmerman Studio. PARK(ing) Day is an annual, daylong global event where citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public mini-parks, or “parklets”. In Philadelphia, approximately 60 volunteer teams design, build, and install these temporary 170 square-foot parklets throughout the city as a gift to their fellow citizens. All parklets are self-funded.
PARK(ing) Day challenges us all to reconsider whether we are making the best use of our limited urban spaces.
Soon we will be sending out an official invitation and waiver form. If you are interested in participating, please contact Jennifer at the front desk, x7100 or jwilliams@friendscentercorp.org.

Teen Voices of the City Ensemble (T-VOCE), under the direction of Emily Sung, performed on May 17 for a full house as part of the Annenberg Center’s annual Children’s Festival. The concert also featured dancers from Esperanza Charter Academy. For the first time, this collaborative venture was offered as a full-year program during 2017-18. Students from across the City of Philadelphia met each Saturday (usually at Friends Center) to explore choral music and spoken word with the aim of discovering and developing their voices, both figuratively and literally. JUNE 2018 TENANT NEWS: SUMMER PREVIEWS: COURTYARD CONSTRUCTION, POOR PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN, AND MORE

June 30, 2018
Issue 37, June 2018
Friends Center Tenant Newsletter

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
June at Friends Center is often a time and a place where people celebrate transitions. Every year, we host middle school and upper school graduations for Friends Select School. This year we will also host Delaware Valley Friends School and Grover Cleveland Mastery Charter School. In addition, two weddings are taking place here this June.
This summer, you’ll also see summer campers from PAFA here a couple of days a week in the courtyard, so they have access to a larger outdoor space than Lenfest Plaza.
Finally, you’ll also see a construction project in the courtyard, starting June 18. The tunnel between the Meetinghouse and 1520 Race Street is in dire need of repair. The work will be contained to the play yard and the southwest corner of the courtyard. The contractor will remove brick pavers, demolish part of the tunnel roof, and repour part of the slab. The concrete will require time to cure and dry out before a waterproofing membrane is applied, in early fall. During the curing period, we should be able to temporarily cover the work area to allow access.
Thank you in advance for your patience with the noise and inconvenience the project will cause from time to time.
— Chris Mohr, Executive Director

April 2018 Tenant News: Warmer weather, Friends Child Care Center turns 40, and more

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

With the arrival of spring on the calendar, we look forward (eventually) to warmer weather. When it is nice outside, feel free to crack the windows open and let fresh air in! Also, the bistro table and chairs are back on the front porch, wistfully waiting for people to use them. The courtyard is available for your enjoyment, too. A Cooper’s hawk was often to be seen out there recently, but it probably continued its northward migration since then.

Speaking of the courtyard, there will be some disruption there this summer. The tunnel between the Meetinghouse and 1520 Race Street needs to be repaired. Work will start in the second half of June. We will keep you posted with more details when we know them.

November 2017 Tenant News:
Green Building Tours, Holiday Closures, Fall Colors

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

GREEN BUILDING TOURS

As mentioned last month, we will conduct at least two green building tours for you, our tenants. You’re also welcome to bring a friend or family member.

To come along, just meet Erick and me in the front lobby at these times:

  • Monday, Nov. 27, 2 pm
  • Tuesday, Nov. 28, Noon

Tours take about half an hour. If there’s enough demand for a third date, we’ll try to find another one in the near future.

– Chris Mohr, Executive Director
