Friends Center has a beautiful native species garden on its front terrace.
The garden provides a space of beauty in an urban setting. Equally importantly, it allows rainwater that runs off the brick terrace to percolate into the ground. We chose native species because they are adapted to the local ecosystems, thus reducing or eliminating the need for fertilizers, irrigation, and pesticides.
The plants in Friends Center’s native garden include:
Autumn Bride (Heuchera villosa)
Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginiannum )
Heart Leaf Foam Flower (Tiarella cordifolia )
Henry’s Garnet (Itea Virginiana)
Oak Sedge (Carex pennsylvanicia )
Tufted Hair Grass (Deschampsia caespitosa)
Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana)
Woodland Aster (Aster divaricatus)
